Simplified Equipment for Automatic Bottom Sounding (BS), Acoustic Communications (AC) & Top Sounding (TS) Testing (SEABATT)

SEACORP developed a specialized test box that enables automation of bottom-sounding, top-sounding, and acoustic communications testing on all U.S. Navy submarines.  This Simplified Equipment for Automatic Bottom Sounding (BS), Acoustic Communications (AC) & Top Sounding (TS) Testing (SEABATT) test set eliminates the need for 10 pieces of COTS test equipment thereby reducing test time and complexity and reducing test equipment volume by 65% and weight by weight by 72%.  SEABATT provides automatic measurement (amplitude, pulse length, and frequency) of BS (or AC or TS) transmissions from a tactical system.  It can also inject targets into the tactical system to simulate bottom (or ice or ranging) targets, which can be varied in amplitude and distance/depth/range.  These capabilities are used to verify that the tactical system is performing as expected.  There are presently six units in service with 5 more in the production schedule while development continues with plans to add a waveform generator and spectrum analyzer.

SEACORP developed a Video Breakout Box (VBB) that enables diagnostic troubleshooting and problem isolation in the video path for Photonics non-penetrating masts via a variety of inputs from the Photonics System.  The VBB has an inboard/outboard isolation capability that permits an at-sea decision by ship’s CO to either return to port to perform repairs or complete them at sea.  This capability allows the ship to continue its planned mission and avoiding a costly return to port when it’s unnecessary.  Features:

  • Portable (18”x14”x7”; 22 lbs)

  • Multiple front panel connections enable testing different video signal types

  • Ruggedized case with cables and connectors enable shipboard use dockside or at sea

  • Smart Charger takes ~8-hours to recharge depleted battery, but unit can run off 115VAC while charging

SEACORP developed an Outboard Sensor Assembly (OSA) Tester, which has been in service for 9 years testing new construction Virginia Class Submarines and 688 and 688i Class Submarines in planned periodic maintenance.  This test set is used for the Thin Line Towed Array Handling System OA-9070/BQ Series Outboard Sensor Assembly and facilitates dockside and/or dry dock testing by minimizing the possibility of personnel injury, damage to sensors, and damage to system connectors.  The OSA Tester features an Acoustic Sensor Test, Electromagnetic Test, and Optical Sensor (OTES) Test modes of operation along with touch-screen operation of embedded operation functions including an oscilloscope, function generator, and voltmeter.  Specific tests using the OSA Tester are contained in SUBMEPP Standardized Test Procedure No. 426-3-0049 REV K. There are presently 5 units in service with 4 more in the production schedule.

SEACORP developed a Large Aperture Bow (LAB) Array Breakout Box Set that includes a Hydrophone Breakout Box and a Projector Breakout Box.  The LAB Array Breakout Box Set facilitates testing by allowing a quick connection to cabling to perform Phase, Capacitance, Hydrophone and Cable Resistance and Megger testing.  It features fast and error-free pin-to-pin testing thereby minimizing the possibility of personnel injury, damage to sensors or system connectors by eliminating the need for pin-to-pin connections of test leads.  Additional features:

  • Safe use of Megohmmeter/Insulation-Resistance Testing

  • Provides front panel jacks and receptacles for safe connection of tactical system interface cables, various meters and megger connections.

  • These units come in a set with cables and there are presently 2-sets in service

SEACORP developed a trio of acoustic sources that provide a signal input at required frequencies to sensor face to enable troubleshooting, verification of proper sensor connection, signal path, and system response during installation and Dry Dock testing phases.  All three acoustic sources are lightweight, hand-portable and can be used with extension poles and each is operable on battery or charger.  The individual acoustic sources have the following features:
